How to optimize Instagram Reels

Captions, hashtags, and vertical format choices that help Reels reach audiences.

Reels are Instagram's main discovery surface. Optimizing them is closer to optimizing TikTok than YouTube - hooks and short-form format dominate - but Instagram has its own conventions. Here's how to prepare a Reel that's ready to be watched.

1. Open with a hook

Like TikTok, Reels reward a strong first few seconds. Set up the payoff quickly with a question, a visual change, or a clear promise, then deliver on it.

2. Write a caption that adds value

Instagram captions can be longer than TikTok's, and the first line matters most because it shows before "more". Open with a hook line, then add value - context, a short list, or a question - and end with a clear call to action.

3. Use a focused hashtag set

Instagram hashtags help categorize content for discovery. A focused set of relevant tags - mixing reach and niche - usually outperforms a large block of unrelated ones. Tailor them to the Reel, don't copy a default list.

4. Keep it vertical

Reels use a 9:16 vertical format. Keep important visuals and text clear of the interface areas at the bottom and right edge so nothing important gets covered.

5. Repurpose from longer video

You don't need to shoot Reels from scratch. A longer video can become several Reels with the right clip points, hooks, and overlays. Read how to repurpose long videos into Shorts - the same method applies to Reels.
